Special Programming for Teaching Academy Membership


The GUMC Teaching Academy for the Health Sciences has evolving programing. Check back often for updates! Below are examples of the types of programming that the Teaching Academy Provides:

Faculty Learning Communities

Members of the GUMC Teaching Academy for the Health Sciences are eligible for special programming only for Teaching Academy members.  Single workshops are open to all GUMC Faculty; Faculty Learning Communities are only for Teaching Academy members.  

A Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is a small group of faculty fellows (8-12 participants) who engage together for an extended time, focused on learning and development in an area of common interest.  The trans-disciplinary cohort is structured and intensive but allows for faculty to determine the direction of the group; to develop individual projects; and to receive peer feedback. FLCs meet approximately every 2-3 weeks. 

In Spring 2016 the GUMC Teaching Academy held three learning communities.  In Fall 2016, we expanded the offerings to five: Instructional Design; Teaching Academy Portfolio development; Platform Skills for Better Presentations; Introduction to Educational Research; and Team-Based Learning Case Development.  All learning communities will meet VIRTUALLY so you can join us from office or home. This fall we are offering two: Self-directed Learning and Teaching Academy Portfolio development.

The Fall Faculty Learning Communities will meet five times from September through November.  Each Teaching Academy member may participate in only one learning community at a time. There are three day and time options for each. They are listed below with their dates and times. 

  • Self-Directed Learning
  • Teaching Portfolio Development for ASSOCIATE members and/or PRINCIPAL members ready to assemble their next domain of expertise.

“Reflect-To-Learn” Academic Book Club

CENTILE is offering two academic book club selections this fall.  Check back for more information, dates, times, and registration details!  And remember, GUMC Teaching Academy members receive their books for free!

On Being A Mentor

In collaboration with the Faculty Development Committee and the Office of Faculty and Academic Affairs, we will read and discuss Brad Johnson’s On Being a Mentor.  Dr. Priscilla Furth, Professor of Oncology & Medicine and Associate Dean for Faculty Development, will be facilitating two-session series (November 30, 2017 and December 14, 2017 from noon – 1 pm).  Application deadline has passed.

On Being a Mentor is the definitive guide for faculty in higher education who wish to mentor both students and junior faculty. It features strategies, guidelines, best practices, and recommendations for professors who wish to excel in this area. Written in a pithy style, this no-nonsense guide offers straightforward advice about managing problem mentorships and measuring mentorship outcomes. When Breath Becomes Air

CENTILE is collaborating with the Medstar Health Physician Health and Wellness Committee for our winter book club selection, Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air. More information to follow.
