Sean Whelton, MD, FACP, FACR

Sean Whelton, MD, FACP, FACR, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine.  He is currently the Program Director and Vice Chair for Medical Education in the Department of Medicine.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Duke University and a Doctorate of Medicine from Tulane University.  He came to Georgetown in 1997 and completed his Internship, Residency, and then Fellowship in Rheumatology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.  After joining the faculty at Georgetown in 2002 he has focused on Medical Education.  In 2003 He became the Internal Medicine Clerkship Director.  In 2015 he became the Internal Medicine Residency Director.  During this time he has overseen the development of a resident Global Health track and a Medical Educator track.  He has been awarded 4 Golden Apple teaching awards and has been inducted into the Golden Orchard.

Sean is a third-generation physician.  His grandfather taught medicine at the University College Cork in Ireland.  He grew up watching his father work as a Rheumatologist and community leader in Florida.  He chose Medicine because it is inherently good.  At its core, being a doctor has meaning.  Educating others, likewise, has deep meaning and value.  Sean has been actively involved in CENTILE since it’s inception.
