Grand Rounds: Resilient teaming in medical education research: lessons from the sociobiology analogy
Presented by Dr. Sayra Cristancho, Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and a Scientist in the Centre for Education Research & Innovation (CERI) at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, London, Ontario, Canada.
In healthcare, we have relied extensively on the analogy of aviation to guide our team training efforts. The aviation analogy has proven very effective when training for dealing with somewhat stable and predictable situations. However, it falters in situations where volatility, uncertainty and ambiguity strike practice and research teams. It is, therefore, probably not surprising that we continue to struggle with making our teams more resilient during disruptive situations. In this interactive presentation, I will introduce the sociobiology analogy as a complementary lens from which to think about resilient teaming in medical education research. Using insights from investigations with action teams, I will engage participants in discussion around the sociobiology principles of communication, decentralization and self-repair as it pertains to medical education research teams.

Workshop: Designing better surveys for education and research
In this hands-on workshop, Anthony Artino, PhD, Professor and Associate Dean for Educational Research at the George Washington (GW) University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Co-Director of GW’s Academy of Education Scholars, will review his seven-step survey design process, and participants will have the opportunity to critique several poorly written survey items and design their own items to measure a construct.

Grand Rounds: Lies, Damned Lies, and Surveys
Mark Twain once wrote, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” Surveys could be added to this list: both statistics and surveys are grounded in “facts” and thus imply objectivity and unimpeachable authority.Yet surveys, when poorly designed and conducted, can include (and often hide) important flaws that can bias results and lead to distorted interpretations, erroneous claims, and unsound decisions. In this interactive lecture, Dr. Anthony Artino will introduce six design principles that will help educators create high-quality surveys for evaluation and research.
